Entrepreneurship program student Darren from Ireland has just completed his first semester at EMLYON Business School in France. Here he shares his experience of studying entrepreneurship both inside and outside the classroom, how he applied his learnings to a social entrepreneurship business project and what he is most looking forward to during his second semester at Zhejiang University in China.
Darren, why did you choose the Global Entrepreneurship Program?
I wanted to take the opportunity to travel and work around the world after completing a business degree in Ireland. This unique program allows students to live, travel and study in three great Business Schools and Universities while undertaking a graduate program in entrepreneurship. Choosing this program has also introduced me to others who share similar goals and interests.
What entrepreneurship opportunities did you experience during your first semester at EMLYON?
EMLYON Business School was supportive in providing many opportunities to experience entrepreneurship during our first semester. Within class, lecturers and professors used real-life entrepreneurial case studies and personal experiences which students could relate to. Outside of class, company visits were arranged by EMLYON where we visited alumni entrepreneurs. The alumni shared their start up and entrepreneurial stories.
What was it like to attend the World Entrepreneurship Forum 2014 as a student of the program?
The World Entrepreneurship Forum (WEF) was a well organised event which allowed us to network and communicate with world renowned entrepreneurs. They were all open and willing to share their entrepreneurship stories and give advice to us students. Various seminars and talks were arranged to attend and listen to different topics in global entrepreneurship.

What project did you work on for your European Business Project at EMLYON?
I worked with a team of 5 people from 5 different countries. Our project was called the Foreign Big Brother’s Foundation. Our goal was to create a TV show which highlighted the gap in education between rural areas and big cities in developing countries such as China. We wanted to film our journey to rural areas, where we would transform rural schools to become a more supportive environment for children to learn and grow. It was an interesting project and a great learning experience to work with an experienced team from 5 different countries and cultures. EMLYON provided us access to alumni, lots of support from the EMLYON Incubator and EMLYON staff helped us to develop our idea.

What are you most looking forward to during your upcoming semester at Zhejiang University in China?
I have never travelled outside of Europe so I’m looking forward to living in China, which is moving and changing at a rapid pace. I look forward to experiencing the culture while on the lookout for new business opportunities.
Study entrepreneurship in France, China and the US!
Darren and his fellow cohort are currently studying at Zhejiang University in China where they will learn more about the entrepreneurship process, opportunities and challenges in Asian business and how to navigate cultural differences, as well as put their learnings into practice with a Chinese Business Project, focusing their study specifically on family business. Finally the cohort will complete their graduate program with a semester at Pace University in the US, focusing more closely on developing a company through a combination of study and a consulting project.
